The motto of ICOM
This 2023 ICOM proposes to celebrate the International Day of Museums with the motto 'Museums, sustainability and well-being‘.
Museums make a fundamental contribution to the well-being and sustainable development of our communities. As trusted institutions and with spaces of union in our social fabric, they are in a unique position to promote positive change. Museums can contribute to the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in many ways: from supporting climate action and fostering inclusion, to fighting social isolation and improving of mental health.
As highlighted in the ICOM Resolution “On sustainability and the implementation of the 2030 Agenda, Transforming our world” (Kyoto, 2019), all museums have a role to play in shaping and creating futures sustainable, and can do so through educational programs, exhibitions, community outreach activities and research.
Every year since 2020, International Museum Day supports a set of SDGs. DIM 2023 will focus on:
- Goal 3 Global health and well-being: Ensuring healthy living and promoting well-being for all people and ages, particularly in relation to mental health and social isolation.
- Objective 13 Action for the climate: Take urgent measures to combat climate change and its impacts, adopting low carbon emission measures in the Global North and mitigation strategies in the Global South.
- Objective 15 Life on Earth: Protect, restore and promote the sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, amplifying the voices of indigenous leaders and raising awareness of biodiversity loss.
