World Puppetry Day

Also called World Puppet Day

The World Puppet Day or also called in our house World Puppetry Day it is celebrated on March 21 of each year.

This day seeks to promote the art of puppetry by defending, among other objectives:

  • The maintenance and safeguarding of traditions and, at the same time, the renewal of the art of puppets.
  • The use of the puppet as a means of ethical and aesthetic education.

The International Union of Marionettes (UNIMA) first discussed the possibility of creating a World Puppet Day during the 18th Congress, in Magdeburg, in 2000.

The official date of March 21, proposed by Indian puppeteer Dadi Pudumjee, was approved in 2002 at the UNIMA Councilors' Meeting in Atlanta. The first International Message was issued in New Delhi in 2003 and has gained in popularity. It is now celebrated worldwide through its National Centers and its members.

A MESSAGE THAT CONNECTS US

Every year, since 2006, a personality from the arts or culture sector is asked to write the message for World Puppet Day.

This year the 2023 message is written by Nina Malíková (Czech Republic). It is about highlighting the values that UNIMA brings and that are found in this millennial art, to bring a message of cohesion and to shed light on this art. Nina Malíková is a professor in the Department of Alternative and Puppet Theater at DAMU, historian, translator and puppet theater journalist. He is also a member of ARTAMA's board of puppet theater experts.

Every year, since 2006, a personality from the arts or culture sector is asked to write the message for World Puppet Day.

Co-director of THI and director of Gaia theater at Teatre Hugo i Inés and Gaia theater. He is dedicated to the theater developing new body language techniques. the theme that Unima proposes for World Puppet Day 2024 IS: THE CLIMATE

MIT Museu Internacional del Titella a Catalunya

This theme suggests several dimensions, all essential for the manifestation of life, and even more so for the manifestation of the living.

This meteorological dimension reveals much more about the elements of time, material time, the cycle time of things and nature, ages and epochs, and even periods on a larger or smaller scale.

Rhythm is never far from the body, music is never far from silence.

The elements are imprinted on us in this footprint inscription. Nature is itself a creation that renews itself, but it is also constantly threatened, because time can be both an illusion and a source.

Weather changes, weather breaks, weather dries up. Even in the desert, life returns to the land.

That which is alive hides only to appear at the most propitious moment to restart the circle and the somewhat crazy wheel of the day: movement is the desire of gesture.

MIT Museu Internacional del Titella a Catalunya

The upcoming World Day 2024 will focus more than ever on the importance of climate change, the elements and the fragile balance of life on earth.

Become the elements, snow, rain, sun, wind and clouds, become a rainbow.

And also the cycle of the planets, the waves and the seasons, as well as the cycles and ages of the body.

And remembering that all these cycles are rhythms that give us the choreography and gestures we need to make the world.

PROGRAM WORLD PUPPET DAY

World Puppetry Day is an incredible opportunity to celebrate the magic of puppetry and the creativity it can inspire.

This festival is included in the official program of the Theater Week, which culminates on 24-3-24.

We always remember the wise words of Federico García Lorca:

"The theater is the poetry that rises from the book and becomes human. And when she becomes human, she speaks and screams, cries and despairs"
