World Puppetry Day
Also called World Puppet Day
The World Puppet Day or also called in our house World Puppetry Day it is celebrated on March 21 of each year.
This day seeks to promote the art of puppetry by defending, among other objectives:
- The maintenance and safeguarding of traditions and, at the same time, the renewal of the art of puppets.
- The use of the puppet as a means of ethical and aesthetic education.
The International Union of Marionettes (UNIMA) first discussed the possibility of creating a World Puppet Day during the 18th Congress, in Magdeburg, in 2000.
The official date of March 21, proposed by Indian puppeteer Dadi Pudumjee, was approved in 2002 at the UNIMA Councilors' Meeting in Atlanta. The first International Message was issued in New Delhi in 2003 and has gained in popularity. It is now celebrated worldwide through its National Centers and its members.

A MESSAGE THAT CONNECTS US
Every year, since 2006, a personality from the arts or culture sector is asked to write the message for World Puppet Day.
This year the 2023 message is written by Nina Malíková (Czech Republic). It is about highlighting the values that UNIMA brings and that are found in this millennial art, to bring a message of cohesion and to shed light on this art. Nina Malíková is a professor in the Department of Alternative and Puppet Theater at DAMU, historian, translator and puppet theater journalist. He is also a member of ARTAMA's board of puppet theater experts.

the theme that Unima proposes for World Puppet Day 2023 IS: THE CALL OF THE FOREST
The imagination of a call or an escape, or simply the search for a refuge where the place of legends, myths and tales invite us to feel and walk the paths of the forest to find clearings, springs and freshness.
The forest gathers the trees and the leaves, it houses the wild and enduring part, the mysterious and dark part, the risk, loss and abandonment part, the shining and oblivion part. A territory that we never finish exploring.
This part of the territory is the place of breath and surprise, a place where noise becomes silence, birdsong into music, fear into courage, the world into enigma. And yet, nothing is closer, because the edge of the field and the first houses are never far away. Distances fade, as do addresses. Are we always in a blue forest? Once upon a time there was a piece of wood that talked.
Thus begins the story of the most famous string puppet, Pinocchio.
Are we still Geppetto or fire thieves?
the forest it is always in danger, because as a resource it can become an obstacle and a fire.
The forest and everything it conveys in terms of imagination and animality is an inverted mirror, from the trunk to the majesty of memory.
The forest is the face of the tree and of multiplicity. We don't just look at the trees, the trees look at us.
In a forest, "he who looks is looked at", he who touches a trunk is touched by the trunk, this is the "temple of living pillars".
Forests cover vast areas of non-human freedom. Branches and twigs are forces of heat.
We invite you to take a side path and play with the pineapples, as well as collect wild fruits, being careful of berries and other poisonous mushrooms. We invite you to listen to the stories of the past that the forests tell. We invite you to discover new paths to never return to the same place. Listen to the stories and songs of the birds. We invite you to discover the call of the forest.
